L.P.S.V. „Aesculapius”

The L.P.S.V. „Aesculapius”, named after the Greek demigod of medicine Ασκληπιός, is the study association for the Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences, Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmacy programmes in Leiden and has more than 1,100 members.

The Leiden Pharmaceutical Students' Association „Aesculapius” was founded in 1885 for Pharmacy students in Leiden. Unfortunately, this programme came to an end at Leiden University in 1985 due to the centralisation of the Master's programme in Pharmacy. Fortunately, the Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences (BFW) programme was established, where students are trained to become drug researchers. Since 2016, it has once again been possible to become a pharmacist in Leiden via the master's programme in Pharmacy. This master's programme offers BFW bachelor's students (or Pharmacy bachelor's students from Utrecht and Groningen) the opportunity to graduate as pharmacists in Leiden. Since 2016, we have therefore been the study association not only for BFW students, but also for Pharmacy students once again.

„Aesculapius” works closely with the educational agencies of the BFW/BPS and Pharmacy programmes. In addition, there is also good cooperation with the LACDR, the research institute associated with the programmes. Furthermore, there is also good contact with various companies and associations that are relevant to the professional field in which our students will end up working. 

„Aesculapius” offers something for every member, tailored to their interests. We organise a wide range of educational activities, such as excursions in the Netherlands and abroad, lunch lectures and symposiums. For members who would like to expand their social circles or simply seek relaxation alongside their studies, we organise a wide range of social activities. These include our monthly Third Tuesday drinks, parties, the gala, barbecues, the first-year weekend and „Aesculapius” weekend, and much more. In addition to offering many activities, „Aesculapius” does much more, of course. For example, if you are a member, you can order your textbooks at a discount via our website. We also offer a club magazine, called the SQ-linair (published four times a year), and an annual almanac for all our members.
